If your loved one is addicted to shoes, you are lucky - there is only one St Valentine's Day gift to consider. The ultimate St Valentine's Day gift for a shoe addict is of course....shoes! Buying shoes for others can be a bit tricky so maybe you should consider Valentines gift cards or Valentines day gift vouchers - the easy way to give the gift of shoes. To help understand the fixation with shoes, a little shoe history might be of interest.

Shoes have been an important part of human life since the beginning of fashion. They have allowed humans to travel over various terrains and adapt to life in a number of climates.

We have come a long way since the earliest forms of footwear made from bark, large leaves, grass, vines, woven palms, and plant fibres attached to the foot in whatever way possible were the "shoes" of the day. Shoes then evolved through the centuries:

•  Roman Shoes - mainly a military type sandal called the caliga, with an exposed toe, front lacing on the leg and a heavily nailed sole. To accommodate more severe weather conditions in Britain, the open toe was replaced by a closed toe.

•  Mediaeval Shoes - Laced up the leg and later giving way to the ankle style with the sole and upper stitched together with thread and the toe becoming a sharp point. The points became longer and an indication of status. The King and his court had shoes with the largest toes. Another popular style shoe was a low cut shoe with a strap and buckle fastening across the ankle and a square toe. Most shoes had slashed decorations on the toe.

•  Tudor Shoes - Shoe heels emerged. By the end of Elizabeth I's reign, the heels on shoes were reaching 3 inches. During the reign of Charles I, shoes began to give way to flamboyant knee boots.

•  17 th Century Shoes - Shoes started to sport buckles as fastenings. Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary of 22nd January 1660, "This day I began to put on buckles to my shoes". Shoe ribbons were soon replaced with shoe buckles by ladies.

•  18 th Century Shoes - women's shoes became more elaborate with embroidery and trimming. Toes were still pointed and men's shoes became plain made of black leather with low heels. Towards the end of Century, women's shoes became lower with lower heels, toes became more oval and then square and shoes generally became very dainty using satin and silks ribbon as laces and ties.

•  19 th Century Shoes - boots became as popular as shoes and court shoes for women became popular.

•  20 th Century Shoes - here is where we had most fun with shoes. The range of styles was huge - consider

•  1920s bar shoes,

•  1930s two-colour

•  1940s utility styles

•  1950s brothel creepers

•  1960s winklepickers and stiletto heels

•  1970s platform soles

•  1980 - pumps, mules, sling-backs, loafers, trainers, western style boots, jelly shoes, breakdancing shoes, ankle boots, Doc Martens.

Women tend to be more shoe-obsessed than men, so a little help to our male visitors might be appreciated. When it comes to women's shoes, there are hundreds of styles, heel heights, colors, materials, and so on. It is of great help (a) to know the style of women's shoes that suits the woman you're buying for and (b) what kind of woman she is. e.g. Is she athletic, career-motivated, the outdoor type, the artistic type or the one-of-a-kind sort of girl? From a mental photograph of the woman she is, narrow your focus to women's shoes that will suit her.

Many reasons have been given for shoe obsession:

•  Shoes feel good on the feet, which contain erogenous zones.

•  Shoes look good on the feet and

•  Shoes make a woman feel feminine.

•  Shoes with high heels have a feel-good factor

•  Shoes are cheaper than cars

•  Shoes can make or break an outfit,

•  Shoes add to our appearance - heeled shoes help elongate the leg

•  High-heeled shoes help give the derriere a better appearance

•  Shoes could be a throw-back to earlier times - the women with the best foot coverings (shoes) and containers (bags) could bring back more substantial food for meals, hence a higher rate of survival! Perhaps the feeling persists somewhat that the more shoes one has, the better the chance of survival!!! Definitely worth consideration.

•  Shoes always fit the same way, regardless of weight gain or loss,

Shoe designers became very popular in this era with great success for the 20th shoe designers such as Patrick Cox, Red or Dead, Emma Hope and Jeffery West.

If you feel buying shoes as a St. Valentine's Day gift is a minefield, you can always consider the following Valentines Day shoe accessories:
