Gloves are a very elegant Valentines day present for your love. The use of gloves and/or mittens is lost in the mists of time.even as far back to prehistoric times! Early cavemen gave their ladies a primitive type of mitten for a winter solstice present. In medieval times, it was customary to throw a glove at the feet of an enemy, thereby challenging his integrity and inviting him to duel. The glove to challenge personal battle was an established part of English Law for nearly 800 years. We are not suggesting that you ladies throw a glove at your man on Valentines Day. Rather as in medieval times, when ladies gave knights their glove to inspire them in the jousting so should ladies today give their own 'shining knights 'a romantic gift of fine leather gloves on Valentines Day.
Much more recently Royalty and dignitaries wore gloves as a badge of distinction. Gloves today still make a valentines gift of distinction & value.
Gloves as an accessory and part of fashionable dress became the norm during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, when no well-dressed woman would appear in public without her gloves. As gloves became more accessible, their popularity grew. Ladies in the 19th century adored opera gloves. One peculiarity of that era was that the ladies tried to fit their hands into gloves a size too small! What a romantic present these days to give her some opera gloves for St Valentines Day although do try & get the size right.
As the centuries progressed, gloves became more extravagantly ornamented. They were made of leather, linen, silk, or lace and were heavily jewelled, embroidered, or fringed. Gloves of this nature were purely decorative and it was inevitable that the emphasis would shift with time to being less ornamental and more practical. Glove-making was considered an art in earlier centuries. Glove-makers' guilds once dominated when society was obsessed with a covered hand. It is now difficult to find patterns for hand-made gloves and mass produced gloves are the norm. Gloves have almost made a most suitable gift.
Gloves can be elegant accessories for both males and females. Napoleon himself was a great lover of gloves. At one stage, he was reputed to have over 240 pairs of gloves! His Empress Josephine, with her penchant for long gloves, started a trend which rapidly spread throughout Europe and the USA during the Napoleonic period. Long gloves were still customarily worn with formal dress until around 1825.
In Victorian and Edwardian periods, it was considered absolutely essential for a lady or gentleman to keep their gloves on at all times, even when bathing! Times have changed of course and long gloves are now the exception rather than the rule. However, you can be assured that long gloves, made from velvet, silk or lace, still pop up whenever a woman wants to look elegant or sexy & so make a wonderful Valentine gift.
